Nets are used to collect macroinvertebrates and fish. Macroinvertebrates (such as aquatic insects and snails) are collected using a net, preserved, and sent to experts for identification. Fish are identified in the field by experts and for the most part released. A few fish are also collected to test tissue for mercury and other contaminants.
